Sacramento State’s Honors Program
Nearly 200 honors students from 10 CSU campuses will attend the conference at the University Union on Feb. 27 and 28.
More than 30 students will present their original projects on Saturday, Feb. 28 on such subjects as science, medicine, engineering, humanities and the arts.
Roberto Pomo, director of Sacramento State’s Honors Program, says five of his students will give oral presentations and take questions:
• Junior David Hills, who completed a tour of duty in Iraq, shares his wartime experiences and how he confronted and overcame his fears.
• Freshman Gatz Nieblas examines the abuse of executive power and the role played not only by politicians, but by voters.
• Freshman Ally Louie traces the history of antibiotics, how they revolutionized medicine but created unforeseen consequences.
• Junior Jesus Lopez tracks the rise and fall of the petroleum industry and why alternative energy is America’s future.
• Sophomore Sarah Couch, who is a student leader on campus, looks at the skills and qualities that define leadership.
Pomo says his work with the Honors Program has been one of his most rewarding experiences as an educator, and his students are learning they can make an “impact and change the course of policies in California.”
Sacramento State has a partnership with John F. Kennedy High School’s PACE (Program of America and California Explorations) honors program.
Twenty PACE students will attend the conference, and Pomo expects some of these students to continue their honors education at Sacramento State.
