Destination 2010 was started in 2004 by University President Alexander Gonzalez to provide direction for the University’s growth and development over the ensuing six years and to help transform the University from a commuter college into a campus of choice for students. He based the concept on four pillars:
• Fostering excellent academic and student programs
• Building a welcoming campus
• Creating a dynamic physical environment
• Developing community support
The overall plan called for enhancement of academic programs, construction of new student facilities, developing a more welcoming campus environment and increasing community support, all with the goal of enhancing the student experience and increasing the value and prestige of the University and its programs.
“What destination campuses have in common is strong academics, a focus on student success and an emphasis on a vibrant campus life where both students and visitors want to come,” says Gonzalez
To kick-off the year-long celebration, the University has launched a new website that provides a look at the Destination 2010 initiative and highlights its major accomplishments in an innovative and modern way http://www.csus.edu/destination2010/
The website is a mix of text, videos, photos and links that tell the Destination 2010 success story. It includes a timeline video presentation that summarizes the many achievements of the University under Destination 2010. In addition, it includes a virtual tour that provides panoramic views of points of interest on campus.
“All the important activity that has occurred in the last six years under Destination 2010 is a milestone the campus should celebrate,” says Carole Hayashino, vice president for Advancement. “The University has a lot to be proud of and the new website is one way to show how Sacramento State is poised for the future.”
Since 2004, the University has made numerous improvements to student learning, including enhancements to its advising programs, mandatory orientation for incoming students, development of a new general education honors program and the start of the first ever independent doctorate program in Education Leadership. The University has also increased development and research opportunities for faculty and has brought hi-tech into teaching through its “smart classrooms.”
The campus has also gotten a makeover during this time with the addition of new parking lots and the construction of a new book store, suite-style residential housing and a new wellness center.
“Destination 2010 is not an end point. It’s a work in progress, and we will continue to build on what we started,” Gonzalez says.
